Tangalia Art: Born Out of Love story centuries ago:
Tangaliya craft having its native place in Surendranagar, Gujarat, India has a very interesting story behind its being. This thread beads are real pearls of love between a boy and a girl belonging to different community – former from Shepherd and later from weavers’. They both married with love against the society’s custom and resistance. To overcome the struggle of life through the skill and resources – the boy had wool and the girl had weaving skill, together by utilisation of it wisely, they invented to form a pattern with the help of woollen thread in a weave.During the weaving process, the tiny thread of weft is embedded on warp threads after accurately counting the threads to form geometrical designs. Such woven fabric had feel of embroidered design on the both side of fabric. Earlier the fabric gave coarse and thick feel and used as lungies or fabric to wrap around waste and legs known as Tangalia fabric. Women of the Bharwad community are often seen wearing dotted wrapped skirts in black with contrasting embellishments created by woven dotted forms, utility of covering legs lead to name the art as “Tangalia”. Also the other fabric manufactured by such weaving are Galmehndi, Dhablo, Duhnsu and Charmalia.In present days the weavers learnt the need contemporary customers and experimented weaving with various type of yarn to discover most suitable to market needs are Cotton, Silk and acrylic yarn (in lieu of wool).The grace of texture on Eri or Mulberry Silk and most versatile Cotton is unmatched with.Photogrpahs of journey from traditional fabric modern fabric.
